The union minister launches the second phase of India's annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) initiative. The drive has started to target and eliminate lymphatic filariasis cases from the country.

The Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare has launched India's second annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) initiative.'¯

'œIndia is committed to eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis by 2027, three years ahead of the global target through mission mode, multi partner, multi sector targeted drive', said Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare.

Further, the union minister stated that it is possible to eliminate the disease from the country through 'Jan Bhagidaari' and 'Whole of Government' and 'Whole of Society' approach programs.

The second phase initiative started on Aug 10, 2023, and includes 81 districts in 9 endemic states (Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh).

He emphasised the need for a coordinated effort that involves every sector of society, not just the government.

To ensure a healthier nation for all, the Union Health Minister also emphasised the importance of improving coordination between state and federal governments. Highlighting the success of Ni-kshay Mitra as one example of the Jan Andolan activities' achievements in health.

Dr Mandaviya said, 'œCommunity engagement will contribute significantly in garnering success in this mission by the involvement of all stakeholders starting from the grassroot levels.'

The Health Minister talked about infusing awareness in different generations and ensuring communication campaigns at villages and panchayats. This emphasises the broad reach of popular movements. The regional approach provides a common awareness of the illness and encourages participation in its eradication.

Dr Mandaviya advocated that 'œgreater emphasis should be placed in consumption of medicine in front of healthcare workers or professionals as measure in eradicating this disease.'

Dr. Mandaviya unveiled the National Guidelines for Clinical Management of Dengue Fever and Chikungunya Fever 2023 at the event. This simultaneous emphasis on various disease prevention techniques reflects India's all-encompassing strategy for preserving public health.

It is recommended by the Union Minister to consume medicines to ensure the MDA initiative's effectiveness diligently. He advocated for medical professionals to oversee pharmaceutical administration. This approach guarantees the proper dosage and adherence, thus maximising the treatment's efficacy and accelerating the process toward an India free of filariasis.

Shri Sudhansh Pant, secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, added, "The launch of the Mass Drug Administration campaign against filariasis marks a pivotal moment in our nation's health agenda.'
