The initiative seeks to create applications to revolutionise various sectors such as education, agriculture, health, power and transportation with the help of 5G Use Case Labs. The objective of the labs is to build competencies and engagement in 5G and beyond technologies for students and start-up communities.

At the 7th Edition of the India Mobile Congress 2023 (IMC) inaugural event, PM Narendra Modi launched 100 ‘5G Use Case Labs’ for educational institutions across the country.

The initiative seeks to create applications to revolutionise various sectors such as education, agriculture, health, power and transportation with the help of 5G Use Case Labs. The objective of the labs is to build competencies and engagement in 5G and beyond technologies for students and startup communities.

Reportedly, the 5G Labs will have a significant impact on the healthcare sector. It will offer several benefits including improved telemedicine facilities which in turn will help doctors consult with patients in real-time, regardless of their location, quick transfer of large files such as high-resolution medical images, enhanced remote patient monitoring, and enabling the use of advanced technologies.

Moreover, 5G Labs can fuel the development of AI-enabled technologies in healthcare, leading to advancements in predictive analytics, precision medicine, and patient care.

Additionally, the labs will provide an automated test environment for the private sector, academia, and government to work together on product innovations leading to improved diagnosis and treatment.

“We are not only expanding 5G in the country but also moving in the direction of becoming leaders in the area of 6G technology…Everyone knows what happened during the 2G (spectrum allocation during UPA govt). During our government, 4G was expanded but there was no stain on us. I am confident that India will lead the world in 6G technology,” PM Modi said.

“Be it technology, be it connectivity, be it 6G, be it AI, Cybersecurity, Semiconductors, Drones, Deep sea, the times to come are going to be completely different and it is a matter of happiness for everyone that our young generation is leading the future of the country,” he added.

The 5G lab equipment would include 5G SA infrastructure (mid-band), 5G SIMs, Dongles, IoT Gateway, Router and Application Server to meet lab needs along with a management dashboard.

The ownership of the Lab Assets will be with the beneficiary institution, during and after the project completion. The beneficiary institution shall provide necessary facilities such as space, power supply, internet, intranet, and tech manpower for local maintenance.

Earlier, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Union Budget speech stated that the government will set up 100 labs in the top engineering institutions.

The launch of 5G Lab USe Case Labs technology is expected to revolutionise healthcare by enabling new business models. Further, it will be a substantial enabler of a new era of "personalised healthcare"

Many healthcare institutions are utilising 5G to address the modern needs in the healthcare sector. For instance, the Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals Kolkata launched a comprehensively connected 5G ambulance. It is equipped with advanced medical equipment, patient monitoring applications, and telemetry devices, the 5G-connected ambulance enables real-time transmission of critical patient data to the hospital, significantly reducing response times and enhancing care quality.

Likewise, Zenzo launched a 5G ambulance service in Mumbai for enhanced critical care. This ambulance features advanced technologies to elevate the precision and swiftness of emergency medical interventions, resulting in better patient outcomes.
