VIMSAR, Odisha Coming Up with a Cancer Care Centre Infusing INR 34 Cr Investment

Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla is going to launch a cancer care centre with an INR 34 Cr investment. The completion of this facility is expected by July 2024.

The Public Works Department oversees the construction of a ground-plus-one-story building on the institution's premises.

Commenting on the same, Santanu Sahu, assistant executive engineer of PWD, said, "The foundation part of the building is nearing completion, with plans for a bunker as part of the facility.”

Further, the centre will house two linear accelerator machines, focusing radiation with pinpoint accuracy, sparing nearby healthy tissue. These machines enable various types of external beam radiation therapy, including image-guided radiation therapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

Aside from offering advanced treatment options, the cancer care centre will provide outpatient department services for dependent patients. VIMSAR, catering to around 1,000 new cancer cases annually from western Odisha and neighbouring states, plays a crucial role in healthcare services in the region.

A representative from VIMSAR emphasised the substantial benefits for patients, stating, "The establishment of the cancer care centre will significantly benefit patients, offering advanced treatment options and improving overall healthcare accessibility in the region."

In another development, the American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Nangia Specialty Hospital in Nagpur inaugurated a dedicated Lung Cancer Unit, aiming to enhance effective diagnosis and management.

Furthermore, in December 2023, HCG Abdur Razzaque Ansari Cancer Hospital in Ranchi introduced Jharkhand's most advanced Elekta Versa HD Platform for precise external radiation therapy, simplifying treatment planning and accelerating recovery.

Previously, in November, Lucknow-based Kalyan Singh Super Specialty Hospital unveiled a new 4D-CT simulator machine to treat cancerous tumours with greater precision. The technology tracks tumour movement during respiration, leading to improved treatment outcomes and fewer side effects.
