The advanced facility will act as a hub, promoting innovation, speeding up advancements in biotechnology, and helping researchers enhance their skills and pursue entrepreneurial goals.

Thermo Fisher Scientific, a leading scientific services company, has joined hands with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) to launch a Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

This collaborative initiative aims to be a hub for innovation, fostering breakthroughs in the biotechnology sector and providing researchers with the infrastructure and expertise to enhance their skills and entrepreneurial endeavours.

Under this partnership, C-CAMP will offer the necessary infrastructure on its premises for setting up the Centre of Excellence. Thermo Fisher Scientific will equip the facility with cutting-edge, workflow-based solutions in flow cytometry and molecular biology.

Furthermore, the company will extend its expertise to provide research and training opportunities to scientists affiliated with startups under the C-CAMP umbrella, academic institutions, and biopharma and biotech organisations.

Amit Chopra, managing director of India and South Asia, Thermo Fisher Scientific, said, "India's bio-economy has consistently witnessed robust double-digit growth over the past decade, projected to reach $300 billion by 2030. The government has been actively fostering an enabling ecosystem to advance biotechnology research, manufacturing and capacity expansion across the country. Additionally, there is a strong emphasis on promoting collaborations between public and private entities and establishing a robust network of bio-incubators and start-ups."

Chopra expressed Thermo Fisher's commitment to supporting these efforts and elevating India's global standing in the biotechnology domain through collaborations such as the one with C-CAMP.

C-CAMP, backed by the Department of Biotechnology, operates as a key startup hub in the fields of science and technology. The organisation is dedicated to facilitating bioscience research and entrepreneurship. Having supported over 400 start-ups, C-CAMP plays a crucial role in advancing research in areas including drug discovery, cell and gene therapy, and biofuels.

The collaborative Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru is poised to contribute significantly to India's biotechnology landscape. The initiative aligns with the country's aspirations for growth and leadership in the biotech sector by providing a platform for collaboration, innovation, and skill development.

In another development, recently, C-CAMP entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Medical Education & Research Department (ME&RD), Government of Assam, to strengthen public health infrastructure. The collaboration seeks to drive innovation-focused programs, promoting technology adoption by healthcare practitioners, infrastructure upgrades, and capacity-building.

In the future, the three-year pact aims to improve early screening and detection of Retinopathy of Prematurity, a common eye disease affecting premature babies and newborns, through context-specific advanced health solutions.
