Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, virtually inaugurated these advanced facilities.

In observance of World Mental Health Day 2023, the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) launched three major infrastructure upgrades: the Centre for Brain and Mind, Platinum Jubilee Auditorium and Academic Facility, and Administrative Office Complex.

Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilisers, virtually inaugurated these advanced facilities.

The Centre for Brain and Mind is a collaborative effort with the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS). Supported by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies with its INR 100 Cr donation, NCBS aims to thoroughly investigate a large cohort of severely mentally ill patients, including conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, dementia, or addiction within families.

The research will span two decades, focusing on understanding the causes, correlates, and courses of these disorders and exploring potential interventions and treatments, utilising advanced imaging, genetics, and stem cell biology techniques.

One notable aspect is the commitment to openness and collaboration, with the database and repository being open source to maximise utilisation by scientists globally, propelling advancements in brain and mind research.

Additionally, the centre prioritises public engagement and community outreach to ensure effective communication of research outputs to patients and their families.

The Platinum Jubilee Auditorium and Academic Facility, constructed for INR 13.60 Cr, cater to the burgeoning number of students and academic programs in psychiatry and related disciplines, featuring a 345-seating capacity auditorium and a well-equipped academic wing.

Moreover, NIMHANS has inaugurated a new Administrative Office Complex to streamline administrative operations and enhance efficiency, costing INR 11.11 Cr. Spanning 2200 square metres.

In a recent development, Cipla Foundation and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) joined hands to establish a neuro-palliative care unit in Bengaluru.

This new unit offers support to individuals dealing with neurological conditions including alzheimer's, dementia, and parkinson's, providing a range of care options, including in-patient, out-patient, and home care.
